Transistors
  • is a three-terminal semiconductor device that can be used as a SWITCH or AMPLIFIER:
    • the transistor as a switch is used to turn ON or OFF a circuit (is used in building logic circuits)
    • the transistor as an amplifier is used to amplify the voltage or current

Transistors - Types

Bipolar Junction Transistors (BJT)

  • is a type of transistor that uses both electrons and electron holes as charge carriers
  • in contrast, a unipolar transistor, such as a field-effect transistor, uses only one kind of charge carrier

Field-Effect Transistor (FET)

  • is a type of transistor that uses an electric field to control the flow of current in a semiconductor
  • are also known as unipolar transistors since they involve single-carrier-type operation
  • the most widely used FET is the MOSFET
