Attention

biased competition - a rudimentary mechanism of attention: the selection neurons to be stimulated at the expense of others

for example, when there is just one object in environment there is no need for attention. therefore attention is the amount of competing information to which our brains are exposed that implies a choice

Types of Attention

  1. controlled attention - conscious focus on a particular thing within an environment
  2. stimulus-driven attention - involuntary attraction to an unexpected event in a person’s immediate environment
  3. arousal attention - e.g. tiredness descends upon person
