Autism vs Down Syndrome
down syndrome and autism are entirely different
Autism
cause is unknown
three main clusters of symptoms recognised as important for diagnosis:
- social impairments
- communication impairments
- repetitive stereotyped behaviors
A diagnosis of autism requires significant impairment in all three areas (see ICD-10 criteria in box) but a child who shows some but not all the difficulties may be described as having autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) not full autism
Down Syndrome
cause - genetic condition called trisomy 21, where a person inherits an extra copy of chromosome 21

- medical problems
identified genes that make individuals more vulnerable to low moods
