In linguistics and grammar, affirmation and negation (aff and neg) are the ways that grammar encodes negative and positive polarity in verb phrases, clauses, or other utterances.
- affirmative (positive) form expresses the validity/truth of a basic assertion (e.g. “Jane is here”)
- negative form expresses its falsity of a basic assertion (e.g. “Jane is not here”)
