Adverbs
  • modifies or qualifies an adjective, or other adverb or word group verbs
  • for example: Unfortunately, John walked home extremely slowly yesterday
    • extremely - modifies adverb slowly
    • slowly - modifies verb walked
    • Unfortunately - modifies the whole sentence

Adverb - Position

one of the hallmarks of adverbs is their ability to move around in a sentence

  • Solemnly the minister addressed the gathering
  • The minister addressed the gathering solemnly
  • The minister solemnly addressed the gathering

Adverb - Types

  • directional adverbs or locative adverbs - here, home, downhill
  • degree adverbs - extremely, very, somewhat, enough, nearly
  • manner adverbs - slowly, slinkily, delicately
  • temporal adverbs - yesterday, Monday
  • frequency adverbs - always, usually, never, hardly, sometimes
  • opinion adverbs - actually, certainly apparently, clearly, obviously
