Linking Verbs
Copula

  • connects the subject to a subject complement that identifies or describes the subject (any form of be (am, is, are, was, were, has been, are being, might have been, etc), become, and seem)
    • am God # the subject complement God identifies the subjectI
    • Marcus is a God # the subject complement a God describes the subject Marcus

Auxiliary Verbs

  • is a verb followed by another full verb
  • can be further divided into:
    • linking verbs - connects the subject to a subject complement (e.g. any form of be,do,have)
      • Marcus is flying
    • modal verbs - an auxiliary verb that expresses necessity or possibility (e.g. must, shall, will, should, would, can, could, may, might, etc)
      • Marcus must be flying

Transitive Verbs

  • requires a direct object to act upon
    • Could you phone the neighbors?
    • I caught a cold.

Intransitive Verbs

  • does not require a direct object to act upon
    • They jumped.
    • Listen!

Transitive/Intransitive Verbs

  • some verbs may be used both ways
    • Urged by the others, she sang.
    • She sang the national anthem at the hockey game.

Bi-Transitive Verbs

  • Professor gives student the grades

Phrasal Verbs

  • a group of words that behave as a verb: turn down, rule out, find out, go on
